Last week, I added a poll to my post to gauge reader preference regarding how I should introduce my first song. Since the vote was a tie, I guess you'll have to appreciate my efforts in any way I see fit.
Having to record my own music is a pain because I keep making progress and then erase it all. Most times, I let myself down by insisting on perfection. With this song, I basically forced myself to keep going.
There were moments when I felt every note had to be on point, every word expertly articulated, and every emotion flawlessly conveyed. But then, I had to remind myself that it's okay not to be perfect all the time. In fact, it's our imperfections that make us unique and authentic.
As I continued to work on this song, I realized that capturing the vibe and emotion I wanted to convey was the most important thing. It’s just a demo, after all. I wonder if, over time, I can learn to relax…geez.
For now, I’m just going to post and run! Take me as I am.
Time for a Deep Dive!
Before we get into the demo, I would like to go over the song lyrics in general. When writing lyrics, I enjoy the process and spend a lot of time determining the best ways to get my thoughts out.
“Just Sitting” explores self-reflection, stagnation, and the need for change. The song's opening refrain, "I am just sitting," immediately establishes the mood of inaction and inertia. How I repeat the refrain emphasizes the sensation of being physically and figuratively stuck in one spot.
The line, "I wish that I could get up," expresses my strong desire for movement and change. In stark contrast to the previous refrain, this line expresses my desire for a new beginning and my determination to take action toward that goal.
I like how the words contrast my ideals with my actual circumstances. When I say, "all that I have doesn't measure up to my plans," I'm highlighting the gap between my goals and what I've actually accomplished. This discord creates tension and annoyance. (If you’ve read my post about executive dysfunction, you should understand where I’m coming from.)
The physical and mental restlessness that can come with a sense of stagnation is also addressed in the song. A vivid image that can represent a sense of disorientation or aimlessness is the description of falling asleep after driving, rather than getting out of the car. This is a real thing I did frequently, so it's not just a metaphor.
The song also alludes to a yearning for self-expression and connection by addressing the topic of silence and unspoken words. The lyrical theme of having a lot to say but not saying anything at all conveys this inner turmoil and the need to break free.
Additionally, "Just Sitting" discusses the difficulty of daydreaming and making plans but failing to act on them. I’m sure many people can relate to the recurring cycle of unfulfilled ambitions and the difficulty of staying motivated, which I try to reflect on throughout the entire song.
By my referencing of time as a progressive force, I hope you are reminded that development is unavoidable. However, sometimes, that development can be damaging if you remain stagnant. This is why I decided to end the song the way I did.
Gotta commit to it or die” is a powerful expression I decided to conclude the song with because it highlights the direness of the situation. It could indicate an understanding of the importance of embracing change for one's own development and continued well-being. However, it is also a sobering reminder of what happens when people don't do anything.
I hope you enjoy this demo, not as a flawless masterpiece but as a genuine expression of what I discussed last week. Thank you for being part of this journey as I learn to trek through the muck and mire my mind creates. *sigh*
As you can see, gaining access to my demo is not free. Anytime I post the music I make, it will be behind a paywall. Making this stuff is not an easy task! Until next time, my friends. <3
